Manhattan Beach Pier

Kim, Jon, and little Brady were a referral from previous clients and friends Rebecca and Andrew Chase, who’s wedding I shot back in 2012 at the Oviatt Penthouse. They all live in Virginia now, but when the Romito Family came to visit the West Coast, they wanted some iconic family beach photos! And what better place than the Manhattan Beach Pier – located at the end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard in California, the Manhattan Beach Pier is a perfect spot for family photo shoots. Right before sunset, I love the almost always perfect light, streaming through the beams, and when you have a family as cute and well dressed as these three, getting good shots is not hard at all! Not to mention, I am always grateful to clients who let me direct them, even when it means they are gonna get a little wet! Kim and Jon were so willing to do whatever I asked, and the result was magic. Thank you, Romito Family!

“The pictures are BEAUTIFUL!!  Jon and I can’t stop looking at them.  We want to order prints but we truly can’t pick out which ones we like the best.  I’m seriously blown away with your work.  We are so awkward in front of the camera and you made us look good!” – Kim

Valentine’s Day Bridal Inspiration

“All the Pinks”

“When I think of Valentine’s Day, I think of grade school heart candies, bubble gum pink and lipstick red. But for this Valentine’s Day Bridal Inspiration shoot, we felt inspired by ALL the pinks – from the lightest of blushes to the brightest corals, we did not discriminate. And when you engage all the pinks, a sort of bubbly decadence emerges. With Claire La Faye’s Before Sunset gown and its dip dyed ombré blush train and sexy draping silk off-the-shoulder sleeves, paired with Emmy London’s delicate but stunning silver Teardrop belt, we started with a look that was oh-so-romantic. Then we added a bouquet full of an abundance of pinks, with the papery petals of the poppies to the ruffled layers of the ranunculus. And we tied it all together with a dessert spread that would make any lady swoon.

From a styling perspective, we stretched beyond the Rapunzel locks of tradition, and worked with a more modern bride with a short haircut. When it comes to styling short hair for a wedding, many ladies are at a loss. But Jenni of The Blushing Bird has all the answers. For this look, Jenni explains, “I used the Debbie Carlisle mirrored-pair Nora combs, because they provide such a bold, romantic touch to an edgy short ‘do. The Swarovski navette crystals and tiny ivory freshwater pearls are hand-crafted to a lovely and slightly wild floral shape, adding an organic elegance that perfectly frames the face.” Because fairytales are for today’s romance, not just the renaissance.

“And let’s be real, Valentine’s Day is the get-spoiled holiday after all,” Jenni proclaimed. So we added cookies and diamond earrings, all framed beautifully by an eclectic set of vintage plates from Fern & Bone.”  More yummy treats and the not-to-be-forgotten bubbles in pink goblets rounded out our goodies, making this a Valentine’s Day celebration fit for a queen. And the ever talented Meghan Christine captured all the bubbly pinks with bright perfection! Cheers!” – Marisa Ringe, Revel Petals

Wagner Grove and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

When Matt first came to talk to me about proposing, I was thrilled! And as the conversation went on, it just got even more exciting. During a meeting at my studio, Matt and I put our heads together, trying to think of the best way to make this happen. Not only am I able to bring my perspective of a photographer, but as a woman, and Matt brought the most important part – details about Blaine and the things she loves. After hearing their story, the brainstorming seemed effortless – and the perfect plan came together. Blaine had always talked about Santa Cruz with such affection, calling it “the cutest town she had ever been to”. We also discussed her love of history, museums, that sort of thing, which is where the idea for the “historical plaque” was birthed.

Matt drove all the way from Los Angeles to Santa Cruz to scout locations. He came back most excited about two places, Wagner Grove and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Wagner Grove, to fulfill Blaine’s love of nature and trees, and the famous boardwalk for FUN, of course!

Proposals are always simultaneously nerve racking (wanting everything to go off without a hitch!) and humbling (that you get to be a part of such an important, and usually private, moment). I’m not sure I have met a guy more invested in making the moment SO special for his girl… and Matt, you pulled it off and it was one of the most sweet and romantic things to witness!

Read the full story below:

How They Met

“Matt and I met in our college group at church. I was the new girl from Oklahoma and our friend introduced us because he was from Texas. For two years, we were just friends. We said hi, smack talked about football and that was basically it. Then one night, he showed up to church looking like a mess. He had on this shirt; it was stained, wrinkled, and missing a button that was held together by a big safety pin on the outside. He said it was his favorite shirt and didn’t mind if it was a little worn. Being the crafty and caring friend I am, I said that as his sister in Christ I couldn’t let him walk around looking like that. I offered to fix his shirt and any other worn clothes, not thinking much would come of it.
A few days later, he showed up at my place with over half a dozen things needing mending. What was supposed to be just a short exchange turned into a two hour conversation! When we started talking one-on-one, we realized how much we had in common. Everything about him felt so natural, easy, and well, at home. After talking for about a week, we went to the Santa Monica Pier for our first unofficial date. I recently had jaw surgery several weeks before and was still very swollen and unable to eat solid food. Between the swelling, braces, and other contraptions in my mouth, my smile looked super weird. We went on the ferris wheel where they make you take a picture. I was insecure about my smile, but Matt just smiled weird right along with me. It was my last night in town for a while, as I was heading back to Oklahoma for the summer. So we went back to my place to make Tres Leches cake, because it was his favorite and he knew I could eat it.
We stayed up all night baking, talking, and packing. The next morning I flew home for two months; and we talked and skyped the whole time I was gone. On August 19, 2013 I flew back and as I was walking into baggage claim I saw Matt standing there is a red heart balloon and a sign: “Will you be my girlfriend?”

How He Asked

On June 7, 2016 my family flew into town for my college graduation. My parents and I then went on a week long adventure through Northern California. Matt said he couldn’t come because he had work. We hit the Sequoias, Yosemite, and ended the trip at Santa Cruz. The last night my mom decided we should eat someplace nice for dinner and also check out some Redwood trees since we had mostly seen Sequoias so far. The directions we got to see the trees led us to a suburban neighborhood where there was a small hidden opening of a path. As soon as you entered the path you were surrounded by a beautiful forest full of 100 ft Redwoods.
As we walked down this winding path, we were completely alone is this beautiful forest except for one hipster taking pictures of trees. At the bottom of this wooden staircase we came to an old historic plaque. Being the history-loving geek that I am, I couldn’t help but read it all. It said:
History To Be Made
Santa Cruz Grove
A historical event happened on the wooden bridge found further along this path. We encourage all who pass to stop and look up when crossing; admire a piece of history that was made on a Tuesday afternoon here in Santa Cruz Grove.
“To my friend, my companion, my sister in faith,
In what way do I express my heart – my faith
Faith in passion, nay faith in hope Nay yet again a faith in true love
A love that can only be sustained through Christ above
A love for his church that none can deny
An example of commitment, through his strength
Yet drowning in grace, in it alone I hope to provide
So accept this gem as a symbol of all I possess
Indeed my love please say – yes” M. J.
I looked to my mom and said, “Wow, what a way to be proposed to,” assuming the plaque was an aging remnant of past lovers. Very curious, I walked to the aforementioned bridge and looked up. When I looked up, I saw a red heart balloon hanging in the trees. I was standing there on the bridge, very confused of how an old plaque could be talking about a brand new balloon. A moment later, I saw Matt walking down the stairs on the other side to meet me on the bridge.
I was overwhelmed with surprise, excitement and joy. My logical side was also confused considering he was supposedly at work hundreds of miles away. With my parents nearby, the love of my life got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
Turns out, the hipsters taking pictures were actually photographers he had hired to capture it at all. After taking a few minutes to bask in the joy and excitement, we then took advantage of the beautiful landscape and took our engagement photos!”

Hummingbird Nest Ranch

From the sweeping vistas to the finest details, Hummingbird Nest Ranch is an event venue unlike any other and it simply takes your breath away. Nestled in the Santa Susana Mountains less than a half hour from L.A., this extraordinary property boasts an exquisite main villa with regal Spanish architecture and décor, a gorgeous array of outdoor spaces giving guests a feeling of unsurpassed warmth and luxury. This extensive property with its shaded groves of olive trees, sparkling fountains, romantic accommodations, and stunning canyon setting is absolutely one-of-a-kind.

Because of this, and so many other reasons, Erica and Bobby’s might be my favorite all time wedding. Not only is it evident how much they love each other, but Erica’s taste and design style is just dreamy. I was so honored to be the one chosen to capture all the stunning details and sweet, heartfelt moments. Everywhere I turned was more beauty to behold!

Erica and Bobby

Like so many couples, Erica and Bobby met online in November of 2014. While Erica was skeptical about anything working out between them at first, Bobby was adamant in pursuing her. They spoke for weeks before meeting in person, and eventually she gave in to Bobby’s charm and they had their first date at Bodega Wine Bar in Pasadena. They captured each other’s heart from the very first date and by the second date they knew they were made for each other and no one else. They both love how kind, caring, loving and sacrificial the other can be. Their wedding at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch this past July was nothing short of perfect.

The Proposal

Bobby proposed to Erica in Napa Valley on her 30th birthday… aka best birthday gift ever! They had spent the day wine tasting and then went for dinner at Auberge de Soleil. Bobby arranged the best seat out on the porch so they’d have a stunning view of the mountain and the sunset. After dinner he had the waiter come out with dessert and written on the plate was “Will You Marry Me?”. Bobby went down on one knee and popped the question with everyone in the restaurant clapping and cheering as Erica said “Yes!”. What made this night even more special was the fact that Bobby asked Erica’s parents and his very own daughter for permission to wed Erica. Bobby’s older sister, passed away in 2001. Her favorite flower was the sunflower.
Erica took it upon herself to put sunflower arrangements all over the house and the backyard in an effort to make Bobby’s mom smile and feel more comfortable. He didn’t even remember telling Erica about the significance of sunflowers to his mom.  But Erica sure did. “It’s actions like these that show what kind of a person Erica is. My mom was glowing when she saw the arrangements and had a great time. That meant so much to me I literally cannot express it in words.”

Layered Boho Rehearsal Dinner

“When working with our Bride Kelly on her wedding, she wanted to keep it very romantic and vintage themed, but much of her personality and style has a boho flair, something we wanted to show off during the rehearsal dinner. New DTLA warehouse venue HNYPT was the perfect blank canvas to hold their ‘Layered Boho’ themed Dinner.

Kelly is very much a part of the foodie scene here in LA, working for pop-up dining club Dinner Lab – so she already had the perfect caterer picked out: Flatiron, and they decided on a gourmet taco menu, which led us to add some south of the border flair to our boho décor, including the focal point of straw mats we hung from the 20’ trusses.

We wanted a mix of modern furniture with vintage accents, to drive our eclectic boho theme – and found a perfect mix of rentals to fit the bill utilizing the fun hairpin leg tables + modern chairs of Modi Event Supply, along with the vintage rugs and accents from Found Rentals, and vintage tabletop items from Dish Wish.Keeping the flowers loose and wild was a perfect touch from Wild Vase Florals – pops of yellow and red pulled in the color from the rugs below. We added small tschotskes that were personal to the bride and groom – buddhas and other yoga influences for Kelly, film accents for Michael plus souvenirs from their home states of Virginia and Iowa. The long statement table really showed off the different ways to use the space at HNYPT – what a perfect blank space!

Sophia Loves Letters made the perfect poster-sized invites, using just a touch of geometric shapes to play off her beautiful modern calligraphy. The matching name cards were added to incense sticks on each place setting, giving each guest a fun little favor.

We hope you enjoy a little glimpse on how to personalize your rehearsal dinner, and that it makes the perfect opportunity to show off a little more of your personality in a different way that in the wedding.” – Margaux Fraise, Harmony Creative Studio
